RISD Council PTA Projects |
Clothes Closet
Established in 1986 by then-council president Sue Nivin, the Clothes Closet is a joint project of the RISD and the Council of PTAs. The district provides space and utilities and the Council of PTAs (56 local units in RISD) provide the volunteers and the clothing. According to the RISD Council of PTAs bylaws, the CC shall 1) maintain a used clothing establishment inventory for RISD students, working through local unit representatives, and 2) promote a volunteer program to assist in its operation. The purpose of the Clothes Closet is to help RISD students in need by providing five days worth of gently worn, in-style, school appropriate clothing and toiletries for their use. Each student is also given new socks, underwear, athletic shoes, hat and gloves.
Students from Pre – K to high school are seen by appointment following a referral by their school counselors. All information regarding referrals is kept strictly confidential. Our appointment times are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 2:30 on school days.
This service depends entirely on the ability of this community to provide volunteers, clothing, shoes, and toiletries needed. RISD PTAs are encouraged to donate used items on a weekly basis along with periodic donations from various community clubs, companies, and private individuals. Monetary contributions (made out to the RISD Council of PTAs) are used to purchase new underwear, shoes, and socks, and fill the gaps as needed for jeans, tops, jackets, and shoes. Donations can be made by contacting the Clothes Closet Representative from an RISD school PTA or donations can be dropped off Mondays from 9am -11am at the address below:
The Clothes Closet address is: 970 Security Row Richardson, TX 75081
Directions: One block north of Arapaho, between Bowser and International. The door for the CC is at the center of the building with a small sign on the door. Annual Used Book Fair In 1982, the RISD Council of PTAs held its first Used Book Fair, raising $5,918.66. Twenty-six years later, the Used Book Fair has not only changed locations, to Valley View Center, it has recorded more than $585,000. in revenue to its benefactor: The Dr. J.J. Pearce Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The J.J. Pearce Memorial Scholarship fund was created to honor Joseph Jones Pearce, who served as superintendent for the RISD from 1946 to 1977. Dr. Pearce died in September of 1995, but his legacy continues his devotion to the education of Richardson youth.
Graduating senior students from all four high schools have the opportunity of applying for the J.J. Pearce scholarships, which are awarded on scholastic record, character, extra-curricular activities and financial need. In addition to the student scholarships, funds are available for district teachers who apply. They must have been employed by the RISD for one full academic year and remain in the district the following year. Continuing teacher education creates an on-going benefit to our district as well.
Totally dependent on the generous book donations from RISD campuses as well as the volunteer efforts from local PTA unit’s Council Delegates, Presidents as well as the council board, the book fair has grown and become a great tradition for the district and the community.
When you take time to go through your used books at home and volunteer to work during the annual event, you are helping make a difference for a teacher, a student as well as our community. And, be sure to be a customer. The sale is held in February, please watch for details. |
